Delicious Coconut

Coconut is an edible fruit of the coconut palm tree (Cocos nucifera) of the family (Arecaceae)  Coconuts are considered one of the most important crops of the tropics that probably originated somewhere in Indo-Malaya region that stretches across Southeast Asia, South Asia and parts of East Asia. A single coconut palm tree may yield 100 coconuts annually taking one entire year to fully ripen. Mature coconuts are ovoid or ellipsoid in shape 300-450 mm (12-18) inches in length and 150-200 mm (6-8)inches in diameter and have thick fibrous husk surrounding the single seed nut. The large oval brown seed of the tropical palm tree consists of a hard shell, lined with edible white flesh containing clear liquid known as coconut water.  The tall palm tree yields the coconut which grows annually on coastal beaches naturalized growing in many places along shore lines, inland and and other microclimates.

Coconut palms are highly adaptable trees that once established they can grow in dense thickets and can spread their nuts up to 10 meters.  Coconut palms can also float in the ocean for months and still germinate which helps them establish themselves along coastlines often preventing erosion.  Beside the edible kernel and the drink obtained from the mature nuts the harvested coconut also yields copra the dried extracted kernel or meat from which coconut oil is expressed.  Copra is valued for its coconut oil extracted from it and for its resulting residue coconut oil cake which is used mainly for livestock feed.  Copra was introduced as a good source of edible fat in northern Europe in the 1860s because of the shortage of dairy fats.  In the early 20th century copra popularized in the United States sold as an important export in India, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu (formerly the new Hybrides),  Mozambique, Malaysia, and the Pacific Islands. Naturally growing coconut palms is a significant source of copra but commercial estates and coconut plantations predominate the market in 2024.

The nuts are harvested from the palm tree then processed exposing the fruit flesh which is about 50 percent water and 30-40 percent oil.  30 coconuts provide meat for 4.5 kg equal to 10 pounds of copa.  Coconut meat may also be grated and mixed with water to make coconut milk which is used in cooking or consumed as a substitute to dairy milk.  Unsweetened So Delicious Coconut Milk is a dairy free alternative beverage that tastes great on its own or poured over cereal or consumed as a substitute to dairy milk in your favorite recipes.  It is vegan, NON-GMO verified gluten free product that is only 45 calories per one cup serving including 130 mg calcium, 40 mg potassium, 0.2 mg iron, 140 mcg vitamin A, 35 mg magnesium, 7 mcg selenium, 3 mcg vitamin B12, 0.8 mg zinc.  So Delicious unsweetened milk options taste the simplicity of coconut milk in your favorite dish.   AVA Farms Organic fine shredded coconut is perfect for baking, smoothies and cereals simply delicious made with only one ingredient.

coconut

Coconut is an edible fruit of the coconut palm tree Cocos nucifera a tree of the palm family AceraceaeCoconuts most likely originated somewhere in Indo- Malaya and are considered the most important crops of the tropics. The origins of the coconut are not known as of today as many claim the coconut is native to Southwest Asia, Philippines, Indonesia, including Astillero were likely to be places of its origin. Historically coconuts were first domesticated by the Austronesian people in Island, Southwest Asia and were spread during the Neolithic stone age via seaborn migrations as far east as the Pacific Islands as far west as the Madagascar and the Comoros.  The coconut tree provides food, cosmetics, fuel, folk medicine, building materials and other essential uses. The inner flash of the mature seed as well as the coconut milk is extracted from the shell for use as as dietary sources for many people living in the tropics and subtropical areas.

Today coconut products are readily available across the globe sold as coconut milks fresh and caned, coconut water, coconut flakes, coconut oils, coconut creams, soaps and coconut infused scents of the tropics.  The demand for coconut derived products is anticipated to increase due to the rise in consumer concerns about the use of controversial dairy based beverages, food products and the adoption of vegan diets. In recent years the coconut has been credited for its health benefits often consumed as a nutritious fruit.  According to The National Library Of Medicine the coconut palm is an important crop for communities globally both as a food source as well as fiber, timber and medicine. It contains several bioactive compounds, particularly extra virgin coconut oil.  Many of its health benefits have been overlooked due to its fatty acid composition. One tablespoon of coconut oil contains 50 calories, 5.2 grams saturated fat. 1-gram carbs, 0.54 grams protein.

A diet high in saturated fatty acids has been connected to an increase risk of CVD and other major lifestyle diseases Therefore historically public health recommendations has focused on messages to the public to decrease the consumption of saturated fatty acids including coconut.  There is significant data to support differentiating different food sources of saturated fats to clarify the unique nutrients of each source and the associated health impact. Avoid coconut mistakes consuming coconut oil in moderation while enjoying a healthy diet plan consuming fats and oils of any kind.  Possible benefits of consuming coconut oil include reducing stress, controlling blood sugar, increasing good cholesterol however more research into the effects of regular coconut oil use is necessary.
