New Year’s is a celebrated holiday around the world with billions of people celebrating each year. It is estimated that millions of people celebrate New Years around the world. Historically the earliest known record of New Year's festival dates from about 2000 BCE in Mesopotamia where in Babylonia the New Year (Akitu) began with the new moon after the vernal equinox and Assyria with the new moon nearest the autumn equinox mid September.
For the Egyptians and Phoenicians the year began with the autumn equinox September 21 for ancient Persians it began on the vernal equinox on March 21 and for the Early Greeks it began on the winter solstice December 21 of each year. On the Roman republic calendar the year began on March 1 but after 153 BCE the official date was January 1 which then continued in the Julian calendar of 46 BCE. Early in the Medieval times most of the Christian Europeans regarded March 25 the Feast of Annunciation in the beginning of the New Year although New Years Day was observed on December 25, in Anglo Saxon England. William the Conqueror decreed the New Year began January 1 as New Year's Day but later England joined the rest of the Christendom and adopted March 21. The Gregorian Calendar was adopted in 1582 by the Roman Catholic church who restored January 1as New Years Day. Most European countries eventually followed suit: Scotland 1660, Russia 1918, Germany and Denmark about 1700, and England 1752.
