Herbs Reduce Stress

Stress reducing herbs or nervines offer natural plant based relief from anxiety, stress and insomnia symptoms by reducing nervous system tension in the body. Notable benefits include lower cholesterol levels, improved quality of sleep, and reduced anxiety symptoms. Spices and herbs are essential components for the human diet which has been found in civilizations across the globe contributing to the the taste and flavor of food lessening the need for salt and fatty condiments. Eating a variety of herbs increases nutritional intake while promoting digestion, provides anti-oxidants neutralizing free radicals which are unstable molecules generated by physical and emotional stress that damage cells.  Herbs containing rich compounds including flavonoids and polyphenols break the chain reaction of free radical damage reducing cortisol and inflammation in the body.  Herbs including turmeric, green tea and rosemary contain polyphenol compounds which help protect cells from damage, improve heart health, aid in blood sugar regulation, and promote gut health.

Cooking with herbs promotes good health naturally. Dried herbs and spices are highly concentrated sources of polyphenols such as thyme, oregano, sage, rosemary, and peppermint providing the highest anti-oxidant levels. Potent herb options parsley, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and cloves offer anti-inflammatories, anti-oxidant support and potentially cardiovascular benefits.  “ Spice and herbs are plant based ingredients that enhance the flavor of any meal.  It’s tough to tell the difference between the two.  Roots, rhizomes, stems, leaves, bark, flowers, fruits and seeds may be used to make spices.  Herbs are usually considered non woody aromatic plants valued for culinary and medicinal use.  “ The usual concept of “adequate nutrition” i.e. the nutrient delivery ( carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals, is gradually being replaced by the concept of “ideal dietary balance” which in addition to the components mentioned above, include potential foods to promote health and wellbeing” Annuals of Phytomedicine An International Journal.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an evergreen shrub native to India and Africa which has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine as an adaptogen renowned for reducing  anxiety, and stress by reducing cortisol levels naturally.  Most commercial Ashwagandha supplements contain extracts from the plant roots although some contain extracts from both the leaf and root. The herb also enhances sleep quality, boosts cognitive function, increases athletic performance and builds strength.  It is known to improve sleep quality especially for those experiencing insomnia. Ashwagandha may be safe to take for the short term up to 3 months but the long term safety is not known however more studies are necessary to confirm potential health benefits of this herb. According to PubMed, a systemic review in Bayesian meta analysis revealed that Ashwagandha supplementation was more efficacious than placebo for improving variables related to strength/power, cardiorespiratory, fitness and fatigue recovery in healthy men and women.
