Its leaf buds are used to produce a popular tea beverage and extract. The Camellia sinensis extract is rich in bioactive compounds that are responsible for its aroma, taste, flavor, astringency, and medicinal tea value. Catechins are primarily active compounds found in Camellia sinensis plants credited to cancer fighting properties. Green tea catechins are widely described as efficient in the prevention of lung cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer, and esophageal cancer.  The most popular green tea is Sencha, often made in Japan. The Bancha Matcha and Gyokuro species are made from Sencha tea.
