Voluntary reduction of sodium targets food manufacturers, restaurants, including food service operators for approximately 160 categories of the package and prepared foods sold to consumers. The objective is to decrease average sodium intake from approximately 3,400 milligrams (mg) to 3,000 milligrams (mg)per day, a 12 percent reduction. over the next 2.5 years. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) per day moving toward an ideal limit of no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day for most adults.


Studies indicate more than 70 percent of sodium Americans consume comes from packaged prepared and restaurant foods. Because the average American eats so much excess sodium, even cutting back 1,000 milligrams (mg) per day can significantly improve blood pressure and heart health.  Excess levels of sodium can cause health-related complications and increase water retention that may lead to weight gain, puffiness, hypertension, bloating.  Excessive amounts of sodium/ salt may be hazardous to your health and may put you at risk for enlarged heart muscle, high blood pressure, kidney disease, kidney stones, headaches, stroke.
